Sawtoothed Beetle

The sawtoothed grain beetle is one of the most common insects infesting grain products in the home. An infestation may begin at the time of manufacture or processing, in warehouses of food distributors in transit, on the grocers’ shelves, or in the home.

Adults are small, about 1/10 inch long, slender, very flat, brown beetles. The thorax of the body has six sawthooth-like projections on each side, hence the name sawtoothed grain beetle. Because of the flattened shape, these beetles are able to work their way into packages of food that are apparently tightly sealed.

Rice weevil-granary weevile – Maize weevil

These weevils are very destructive grain pests. Of the three, the rice weevil is probably the most insidious, owing largely to the ability of flight. All three weevils develop as larvae within the grain kernels. They frequently cause almost complete destruction of grain in elevators or bins, where conditions are favorable and the grain is undisturbed for some length of time. Infested grain will usually be found heating at the surface, and it may be damp, sometimes to such an extent that sprouting occurs. Wheat, corn, macaroni, oats, barley, sorghum, Kaffir seed, and buckwheat are just some of the grains and products on which these weevils feed.

Indian Meal Moth

Is a very common household pest, feeding principally on stored food products. In fact, it has been called the most important pest of stored products commonly found in American homes or grocery stores. The larvae are general feeders and can be found in grain products, seeds, dried fruit, dog food, and spices. The Indianmeal moth received its common name from the United States where it was found to be a pest of meal made of “Indian corn” or maize.

The larvae are surface feeders. Most of the “damage” to stored products occurs when the larvae spin massive amounts of silk that accumulate fecal pellets, cast skins, and egg shells in food products. The damage to stored products due to this contamination exceeds the amount of food eaten by the insects. Homeowners and managers of food processing plants, warehouses, groceries and granaries should be alert for signs of infestation.

Cigarette Beetle

The cigarette beetle is pan-tropical but can be found worldwide — especially wherever dried tobacco in the form of leaves, cigars, cigarettes, or chewing tobacco is stored.

Non-food products that it infests include dried plants and herbarium specimens, dried floral arrangements, potpourri, decorative grapevine wreaths, prescription drugs and pills, medicinal herbs, pinned insects, furniture stuffing, papier-mâché, and bookbinding paste.

Flour Beetle

The flour beetle is an insect that attacks stored grains and foods in the pantry. This insect has a world wide distribution and is very abundant in the United States. It generally feeds on finely ground or broken starch materials, such as flour or meal. Adults and larvae feed on broken kernels and fine-grind materials in granaries, mills, warehouses, and other places where grain or grain products are stored.
